The Australian Sabot

High performance, Australian Designed and Built.

The Australian Sabot is the premier junior sailing class in Australia, with a rich history spanning over 50 years. This versatile dinghy, just under 8 feet long, has played a pivotal role in shaping young sailors' futures. With a single sail, Sabots are designed for both beginners and competitive sailors, offering opportunities for skill development and fun on the water.

Building Sailing Skills – The Path to Greatness
Many of Australia’s most successful sailors began their journeys in Sabots. Sydney 2000 Olympic medallist Mark Turnbull famously said, "80% of what I learnt in sailing was in a Sabot". These boats offer a perfect introduction to the sport, helping young sailors build the skills they need to move into more advanced classes like Lasers, Flying 11s, Cherubs, and 29ers. Beyond teaching the basics, Sabots pave the way for competitive racing and lifelong friendships. Their simplicity makes them ideal for beginners, providing a strong foundation for a lifetime of sailing success.

One boat - 3 ways to sail it...

2-Up Sailing – Seriously Fun, Social Learning
Young sailors often start as early as 6 or 7 years old as a crew, paired with an older skipper, sailing 2-up in the Sabot. This arrangement is both social and educational, fostering teamwork and confidence as children share their learning experiences. Sailing 2-up has proven to be an effective method for introducing kids to the basics of sailing in a supportive environment. 2 up sailors use the standard full sail.

1-Up Sailing – Develop Resilience and Independence
Upon reaching 12 years old (or earlier in some cases), sailors transition to 1-up sailing, where they navigate the Sabot solo. This stage develops independence and resilience, as sailors master boat handling and strategic thinking on their own.

1-Up Sailing - Use a Spark Sail
The exciting way for lightweights and new sailors to enjoy sailing their sabot in all conditions! Spark sails are a slightly smaller sail, ideal for smaller kids or those new into the class. Spark sails have proven to be a great progressive class initative to encourage participtation of younger sailors preferring to sail 1-up.

A Friendly, Competitive Class
The Sabot class fosters a welcoming environment for families and encourages parent involvement. Whether you’re new to sailing or a seasoned enthusiast, everyone is welcome to be part of the community. Each year, the Sabot National and State Championships bring sailors together in friendly competition. Off-water activities promote camaraderie among the young sailors, who often represent their states with pride, engaging in spirited team "war cries" that highlight the class’s vibrant atmosphere.

Strong Core Values and Innovation
Sabots are proudly Australian-designed and built, with a commitment to performance and continuous development. Unlike other beginner classes bound by international rules, the Sabot class keeps evolving, ensuring the boats remain competitive and accessible. Recent advancements, such as the Sabot DX hull and composite masts, have reduced the costs of new boats while improving performance. These innovations ensure Sabots remain at the cutting edge of junior sailing.
